SUMMARY:Author Event: Bishop Street to the Bench: An Improbably Journey by Judge Maurice B. Mosley
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Kindred Thoughts Bookstore on Sunday\, November 8th at 2 PM as we welcome Waterbury’s own\, Judge Maurice B. Mosley\, for a conversation about his inspiring memoir\, Bishop Street to the Bench: An Improbable Journey. \nJudge Mosley will also be bringing young people from his community. We encourage you to join us and bring a young person in your life to experience this powerful story of perseverance\, purpose\, and possibility. \nGrowing up on Bishop Street in Waterbury\, Connecticut\, Judge Maurice B. Mosley never imagined his journey would lead him to become a Superior Court Judge\, attorney\, educator\, community leader\, and founder of the Granville Academy of Waterbury. \nIn Bishop Street to the Bench: An Improbable Journey\, Judge Mosley reflects on his upbringing in a close-knit Black community\, the values instilled through family and faith\, his transformative experiences at South Carolina State University during the Civil Rights era\, and the challenges and triumphs that shaped his path through law\, politics\, and public service. \nMore than a memoir\, this is a story of resilience\, mentorship\, faith\, and the power of community. Judge Mosley reminds us that success is not simply about how far we go\, but how many doors we open for those coming behind us. \nThis is a conversation our young people need to hear. \nCome be inspired by a remarkable journey and celebrate the importance of investing in the next generation.

SUMMARY:The 1619 Project: Community Conversations: PROGRESS
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, November 14 at 5:00PM Eastern for our 17th installment of The 1619 Project: Community Conversations. \nThere are many grievances regarding the actions taken by the current administration—too many to list individually. Many of you view our bookstore as a safe space to express your concerns and fears. In response\, we have been active listeners and have provided support in various forms. \nTo help galvanize our voices\, we’ve launched Community Conversations\, a monthly gathering to discuss the impact of current events. Using The 1619 Project as our guide\, we will focus on the themes of each chapter to deepen our understanding of what is happening and how we can better equip ourselves during this challenging time. Where possible\, we will have subject matter experts to lead the discussions\, but we will also rely on each other’s insights. \nThis month\, we will focus on two chapters: Traffic and Progress\, with the conversations being led by co-owners\, Karin Smith and Derek Tompkins. Please review the chapters in preparation for the discussion. \nWe hope you will join us\, be open-minded\, and contribute your knowledge for the greater good of our communities.

SUMMARY:Reading the Classics: The Wedding
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Kindred Thoughts Bookstore for our flagship book club\, Reading the Classics! 📚 \nWe’re kicking off our fifth year with The Wedding by Dorothy West! \nJoin us on Saturday\, November 21 at 5 PM as Cultural Historian Michelle Black Smith leads us in a thoughtful and engaging discussion of this literary classic. \nReading the Classics is an opportunity to explore\, revisit\, and celebrate the rich canon of African American literature while connecting with fellow readers and sharing perspectives. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with a timeless work and a community that loves good literature. \nAbout the Book: \nIn her final novel\, The Wedding\, Dorothy West offers a beautiful and devastating examination of family\, society\, race\, and class. \nSet in the 1950s on Martha’s Vineyard\, the novel takes us into the Oval\, an exclusive community of the East Coast’s Black bourgeoisie. At the center is the prominent Coles family\, whose beautiful daughter Shelby is preparing to marry Meade Wyler\, a white jazz musician from New York. \nHer choice sends shockwaves through this tightly knit community\, forcing its members to confront changing attitudes about race\, class\, identity\, and belonging. \nWith elegant\, luminous prose\, Dorothy West delivers a powerful exploration of love\, tradition\, and the boundaries society creates. \n📖 Read with us. Reflect with us. Let’s celebrate the classics together!
