Brothers & Books looks forward to building a strong community of men who can pour into each other\, centered around books and discussions that build and inspire. Food and beverages are welcome! \nAbout Allow Me Retort:\nAllow Me to Retort is an easily digestible argument about what rights we have\, what rights Republicans are trying to take away\, and how to stop them. Mystal explains how to protect the rights of women and people of color instead of cowering to the absolutism of gun owners and bigots. He explains the legal way to stop everything from police brutality to political gerrymandering\, just by changing a few judges and justices. He strips out all of the fancy jargon conservatives like to hide behind and lays bare the truth of their project to keep America forever tethered to its slaveholding past. \nMystal brings his trademark humor\, expertise\, and rhetorical flair to explain concepts like substantive due process and the right for the LGBTQ community to buy a cake\, and to arm readers with the knowledge to defend themselves against conservatives who want everybody to live under the yoke of eighteenth-century white men. The same tactics Mystal uses to defend the idea of a fair and equal society on MSNBC and CNN are in this book\, for anybody who wants to deploy them on social media. \nYou don’t need to be a legal scholar to understand your own rights. You don’t need to accept the “whites only” theory of equality pushed by conservative judges. You can read this book to understand that the Constitution is trash\, but doesn’t have to be.

Don’t miss this special occasion to celebrate literature and music together in a warm\, welcoming setting! \nABOUT THE BOOK: From blue-note turmoil to grace-note power\, Black women preachers stand tall. In Colored Women Sittin’ on High\, Melanie R. Hill offers a new perspective on the art of the sermon in African American literature\, music\, and theology. Drawing on the womanist cadence of Alice Walker in literature and the rhythmical flow of named womanist theologians\, Hill makes interventions at the intersections of African American literary criticism\, music\, and religious studies. \nPushing against the patriarchal dominance that often exists in religious spaces\, Hill argues that Black women’s religious practice creates a “sermonic space” that thrives inside and outside the church\, allowing for a critique of sexism and anti-Black racism. She examines literature by writers such as Zora Neale Hurston and James Baldwin\, music by Aretha Franklin and Ms. Lauryn Hill\, and sermons by theologians Ruby Sales and Vashti M. McKenzie\, and she takes readers into a sermonic artwork of artists\, preachers\, and freedom movement activists who are\, as Hill contends\, the greatest “virtuosic alchemists” of our time. \nAbout Dr. Melanie R. Hill: Melanie R. Hill\, Ph.D. is Named Term Chair Andrew W. Mellon Associate Professor of Global Racial Justice and Associate Professor of American Literature with tenure with specializations in African American Literature\, Black Music Performance\, and Womanist Literature/Thought/Theology in the Department of English at Rutgers University\, Newark. Her newly released book\, Colored Women Sittin’ on High: Womanist Sermonic Practice in Literature and Music (UNC Press)\, explores the literary and musicological histories of Black preaching women. Colored Women Sittin’ on High has been officially endorsed and praised by both Alice Walker\, author of The Color Purple\, and civil rights legend\, Ruby Sales. In October 2025\, Dr. Hill was inducted into the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College in Atlanta\, GA. In addition to her scholarship\, Dr. Hill is a classically-trained Gospel Soul Violinist who has performed in concert in Paris\, France\, at the White House on two occasions under the Obama administration\, Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, the Apollo Theater\, the Staples Center\, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture\, and for the late Pope Francis’s Papal Mass.

Please come out and show this brother some love! \nAbout the book:\nWhat happens when a loved one dies? \nWhat are the final words longed to be said that would aid in the healing process? \nWhat moments would a mourner wish to relive with a loved one? \nSinking in Moonlight Alone accounts the lives of kindred spirits encountering loss. \nCommunal toil with mental health\, addiction\, family\, friends and desolate decision-making amounting to death are captured in this collection of elegiac verse. \nFrederick-Douglass Knowles II laments the lives of loved ones lost while reserving space for collective grievance. \nCulturally\, western society only allots a limited space to sojourn the magnitude of grievance. \nKnowles memorializes members of his small-town communities of Southeastern Connecticut in this confessional empathetic narrative that recounts: the first time he visited his father’s Korean War grave; watching the Super Bowl with his mother on the last day of her life; querying the mysterious drowning of a friend ruled a suicide; confronting the pharmaceutical industry over the loss of his nephew to opioid addiction. \nThis collection unearths a tempest of emotionality that is most often buried beneath the soil of remorse that flowers the garden of the forgotten. \nAbout the Author:\nFrederick-Douglass Knowles II is a Professor of English at CT State Community College. He is an Emeritus Poet Laureate of Hartford\, CT. Knowles has received the Nutmeg Poetry Award and the Connecticut of The Arts Fellow in Artist Excellence for Poetry/ Creative Non-Fiction. Many of you view our bookstore as a safe space to express your concerns and fears. In response\, we have been active listeners and have provided support in various forms. \nTo help galvanize our voices\, we’ve launched Community Conversations\, a monthly gathering to discuss the impact of current events. Using The 1619 Project as our guide\, we will focus on the themes of each chapter to deepen our understanding of what is happening and how we can better equip ourselves during this challenging time. Where possible\, we will have subject matter experts to lead the discussions\, but we will also rely on each other’s insights.
