SUMMARY:Author Talk and Live Violin Performance with Dr. Melanie R. Hill
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an inspiring Author Talk featuring Dr. Melanie R. Hill and her new book\, Colored Women Sittin’ on High: Womanist Sermonic Practice in Literature and Music\, complemented by a captivating Live Violin Performance. This unique event offers a wonderful opportunity to engage with Dr. Hill’s insights and enjoy beautiful music in person. Don’t miss this special occasion to celebrate literature and music together in a warm\, welcoming setting! \nABOUT THE BOOK: From blue-note turmoil to grace-note power\, Black women preachers stand tall. In Colored Women Sittin’ on High\, Melanie R. Hill offers a new perspective on the art of the sermon in African American literature\, music\, and theology. Drawing on the womanist cadence of Alice Walker in literature and the rhythmical flow of named womanist theologians\, Hill makes interventions at the intersections of African American literary criticism\, music\, and religious studies. \nPushing against the patriarchal dominance that often exists in religious spaces\, Hill argues that Black women’s religious practice creates a “sermonic space” that thrives inside and outside the church\, allowing for a critique of sexism and anti-Black racism. She examines literature by writers such as Zora Neale Hurston and James Baldwin\, music by Aretha Franklin and Ms. Lauryn Hill\, and sermons by theologians Ruby Sales and Vashti M. McKenzie\, and she takes readers into a sermonic artwork of artists\, preachers\, and freedom movement activists who are\, as Hill contends\, the greatest “virtuosic alchemists” of our time. \nAbout Dr. Melanie R. Hill: Melanie R. Hill\, Ph.D. is Named Term Chair Andrew W. Mellon Associate Professor of Global Racial Justice and Associate Professor of American Literature with tenure with specializations in African American Literature\, Black Music Performance\, and Womanist Literature/Thought/Theology in the Department of English at Rutgers University\, Newark. Her newly released book\, Colored Women Sittin’ on High: Womanist Sermonic Practice in Literature and Music (UNC Press)\, explores the literary and musicological histories of Black preaching women. Colored Women Sittin’ on High has been officially endorsed and praised by both Alice Walker\, author of The Color Purple\, and civil rights legend\, Ruby Sales. In October 2025\, Dr. Hill was inducted into the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College in Atlanta\, GA. In addition to her scholarship\, Dr. Hill is a classically-trained Gospel Soul Violinist who has performed in concert in Paris\, France\, at the White House on two occasions under the Obama administration\, Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, the Apollo Theater\, the Staples Center\, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture\, and for the late Pope Francis’s Papal Mass.

SUMMARY:Brothers & Books: Allow Me To Retort by Elie Mystal
DESCRIPTION:Join Brothers & Books on Sunday\, October 11th at 2pm for a discussion regarding Elie Mystal’s book\, Allow Me To Retort: A Black Guy’s Guide to the Constitution. Brothers & Books is a member-led book and discussion group for men of color of all ages. This book club is the ideal forum to exchange thoughts and perspectives\, to deepen your sense of community\, and to diversify the selection of books on your shelf. Brothers & Books looks forward to building a strong community of men who can pour into each other\, centered around books and discussions that build and inspire. Food and beverages are welcome! \nAbout Allow Me Retort:\nAllow Me to Retort is an easily digestible argument about what rights we have\, what rights Republicans are trying to take away\, and how to stop them. Mystal explains how to protect the rights of women and people of color instead of cowering to the absolutism of gun owners and bigots. He explains the legal way to stop everything from police brutality to political gerrymandering\, just by changing a few judges and justices. He strips out all of the fancy jargon conservatives like to hide behind and lays bare the truth of their project to keep America forever tethered to its slaveholding past. \nMystal brings his trademark humor\, expertise\, and rhetorical flair to explain concepts like substantive due process and the right for the LGBTQ community to buy a cake\, and to arm readers with the knowledge to defend themselves against conservatives who want everybody to live under the yoke of eighteenth-century white men. The same tactics Mystal uses to defend the idea of a fair and equal society on MSNBC and CNN are in this book\, for anybody who wants to deploy them on social media. \nYou don’t need to be a legal scholar to understand your own rights. You don’t need to accept the “whites only” theory of equality pushed by conservative judges. You can read this book to understand that the Constitution is trash\, but doesn’t have to be.

SUMMARY:Author Talk & Signing: Dr. Sarah L. Webb on Colorism
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, August 29th at 5 p.m. for an impactful discussion on Colorism. We’re thrilled to welcome author Dr. Sarah L. Webb as she delves into her new book\, “Colorism: The Politics of Skin Tone and How We Get Free.” \nAbout the book: The essential primer on colorism\, and how each of us has a role in dismantling skin tone bias. \nRacism is easy to spot these days; we know its script\, its favorite media tropes\, its legislative tactics\, and how it makes us feel. But there is another societal ill hiding in racism’s shadow: colorism. Colorism is a social hierarchy that favors people with lighter skin tones and stigmatizes people with darker skin tones. More than a debate on social media about who’s most attractive\, colorism frays the fabric of our homes and communities and jeopardizes the lives and livelihoods of individuals most impacted. Dr. Sarah L. Webb’s Colorism arrives as a fresh perspective on how we move toward a world free from harmful stigma and discord—a more liberated\, more loving world. \nIn Colorism\, Dr. Sarah shows us how colorism goes unrecognized by most even as it contours our every day lives. She leads us through cultural myths\, client testimonies and her own personal stories to demonstrate colorism’s global stronghold on communities of color and white communities alike. She dissects how dating and pop culture can be hotbeds of discrimination. And she lifts the veil on how colorism can determine our access to education\, work\, social services\, and politics. Soulfully told and richly informational\, Colorism rounds out with revisions we can all make to show up for one another. After all\, bias may be based on what’s on the outside\, but true healing starts from within.

SUMMARY:Brothers & Books: Burn Down Master's House
DESCRIPTION:Brothers & Books is a member-led book and discussion group for men of color of all ages. \nAbout Burn Down Master’s House: Inspired by true\, long-buried stories of enslaved people who dared to fight back\, a searing portrayal of resistance for readers of Colson Whitehead\, Jesmyn Ward\, and Percival Everett\, from Clay Cane\, award-winning journalist and New York Timesbestselling author of The Grift. \nAs turmoil simmers within a divided nation\, smoke from another blaze begins to rise. Sparked by individual acts of resistance among those enslaved across the American South\, their seemingly disparate rebellions fuel a singular inferno of justice\, connecting them in ways quiet at times\, explosive at others. As these flames rise\, so will they. \nLuke\, quick-witted and literate\, and Henri\, a man with a strong and defiant spirit\, forge an unbreakable bond at a Virginia plantation called Magnolia Row. Both seek escape from unimaginable cruelty. And sure as the fires of hell\, Luke and Henri will leave their mark\, sparking resistance among the lives they touch… \nOne is Josephine\, a young\, sharp\, and observant girl who wields silence as her greatest weapon. A witness to Luke and Henri’s resilience\, she listens\, watches\, waits for the moment to make her move. \nThen there is Charity Butler\, her husband a formerly enslaved man who proved his ferocity as a young boy standing alongside Josephine. At his encouragement\, Charity fights for her freedom in court and wins – only to battle a deeply unjust system designed to destroy the life they’ve built. \nAnd finally\, there is Nathaniel\, who ruthlessly exploits other Black people and mirrors the cruelty of the white men who\, like him\, are enslavers. A perversion of the system of slavery\, his fragile and contradictory rule will become a catalyst of its own. \nInspired by the true stories of the profoundly courageous men and women who dared to fight back\, Burn Down Master’s House is a singular tour de force of a novel—breathtaking in scope\, compassion\, and a timeliness that speaks powerfully to our present era.

SUMMARY:Kindred Book Club: Fire Exit
DESCRIPTION:Kindred Book Club reads Fire Exit by Morgan Talty – Gail’s Pick! \nJoin the members of the Kindred Book Club on Saturday\, July 25th at 5pm as we discuss Morgan Talty’s novel\, Fire Exit. \nThe Kindred Book Club is a member led book club where the members come together to select the book for the bi-monthly discussions. Growing with each meeting\, we are a lively diverse bunch with a common love for books and book discussions. Join us at 5pm to delve into the details of the book! \nAbout the Book: From the award-winning author of Night of the Living Rez\, comes a masterful and unforgettable story of family\, legacy\, bloodlines\, culture and inheritance\, and what\, if anything\, we owe one another. \nFrom the porch of his home\, Charles Lamosway has watched the life he might have had unfold across the river on Maine’s Penobscot Reservation. He caught brief moments of his neighbor Elizabeth’s life―from the day she came home from the hospital to her early twenties. But there’s something deeper and more dangerous than the river that divides him from her and the rest of the tribal community. It’s the secret that Elizabeth is his daughter\, a secret Charles is no longer willing to keep. \nNow\, it’s been weeks since he’s seen Elizabeth\, and Charles is worried. As he attempts to hold on to and care for what he can―his home and property; his alcoholic and bighearted friend Bobby; and his mother\, Louise\, who is slipping deeper into dementia―he becomes increasingly haunted by his past. Forced to confront a lost childhood on the reservation\, a love affair cut short\, and the death of his beloved stepfather\, Fredrick\, Charles contends with questions he’s long been afraid to ask. Is his secret about Elizabeth his to share? And would his daughter want to know the truth\, even if it could cost her everything she’s ever known?

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Andreyah Maria Hernandez Black
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, June 27th at 5pm for an uplifting discussion with CT based author\, Andreyah Maria Hernandez Black regarding her new book\, Revelations for Resilience: Whispers from the Divine for Soul Care. ABOUT THE BOOK: \nWhat if the grief\, loss\, pain\, unforgiveness\, and uncertainity you’ve been carrying could be the doorway to hope\, peace\, joy\, love\, clarity\, effective prayer and spiritual strength? \nWhat if the invisible wounds you hide could lead you into a deeper\, more intimate connection with God through prayer and meditation? \nRevelations for Resilience: Whispers from the Divine for Soul Care is your invitation into that sacred transformation. \nBorn from a season of profound losses\, spousal abandonment\, emotional trauma\, and post-traumatic stress\, this book emerged from a place where survival required steadfast faith\, self-care\, soul-care\, self-empowerment\, and divine intervention. In moments of silence\, forgiveness and humility the author began to receive gentle whispers from God-words of encouragement\, divine revelation\, and healing-line by line\, breath by breath. \nThis collection of inspirational poetry and devotional reflections captures those divine conversations. Each page offers solace\, strength\, and spiritual grounding for anyone navigating grief\, loss\, betrayal\, unforgiveness\, loneliness\, or emotional overwhelm. \nDrawing from decades of experience as a licensed international evangelist\, since 2004\, an alternative medicine practitioner\, entrepreneur\, professional fitness specialist\, arts educator and a gifted performing artist\, since 1986\, AndreYAH Maria Hernandez Black blends spiritual wisdom\, holistic wellness\, and creative expression to support emotional\, physical\, and spiritual restoration. \nThis book doesn’t just speak to your pain-\nIt speaks for it.
