SUMMARY:Michael S. Gordon Talk & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, June 6 at 5pm for an evening with author Michael S. Gordon as he joins friend and moderator Lisette Valle as discuss his book\, C.E.A.S.E. for Equity: Cultivating Empathy And Sustaining Ecosystems for Equity. \nThis is a ticketed event. $55 includes the following:\n* One book\n* Q&A and book signing\n* Catered meal from Trap Chicken \nAbout the Book:\nC.E.A.S.E. for Equity isn’t about red or blue\, left or right\, or where you live – whether in the heart of a bustling city or the quiet of a rural town. It’s not about political affiliation\, geographic location\, or drawing lines between who is right and who is wrong. It’s not asking you to ignore the past but to confront it with courage and compassion. At its core\, this book is about cultivating empathy and sustaining ecosystems for equity – elements\, habitats\, interactions that support all people\, not just a privileged few. It requires you to see the humanity in every person you encounter. It encourages you to break free from narratives that divide. It challenges you to begin the long-overdue process of collective healing and liberation. \nC.E.A.S.E. for Equity invites every reader to take personal responsibility – for your choices\, your language\, and your actions. This book encourages you to contribute with the intent of reforming the social and economic structures that allow prejudice\, oppression\, exclusion\, and erasure to persist. It’s a vision rooted not in blame but in accountability\, transformation\, and love. Above all\, C.E.A.S.E. for Equity is about peace\, justice\, and a sincere concern for the human soul. It’s a call to walk and work together – not simply as acquaintances or allies\, but as accomplices seeking a more just and compassionate world for all humanity.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: John Mills - The Narrative of Primus
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, May 16th at 5pm as we welcome CT based author\, John Mills as he shares his first novel\, The Narrative of Primus: A Lineage Woven into American History. John will also discuss the genealogy process for those who are interested. \nAbout the book: The Narrative of Primus uncovers the remarkable\, nearly forgotten story of a ten-year-old boy taken from his mother’s bedside in West Africa and forced aboard a slave ship bound for America. That boy\, Primus\, survived the Middle Passage\, endured decades of enslavement in colonial Connecticut\, raised a family\, and through faith\, resilience\, and grace\, laid a foundation that would ripple across generations. \nDrawing on rarely cited historical sources including an embedded first-person narrative hidden since 1824 in the writings of Lydia Sigourney\, John Mills reveals Primus as more than a footnote to slavery or a name in a ledger. He restores him as a father\, a church member\, a scholar of scripture\, a community figure\, and a man whose voice still echoes across three centuries. \nThrough meticulous archival research\, Mills traces the lives of Primus’s descendants from the Revolutionary War\, where his son Job fought for American independence while enslaved\, through the Civil War\, where Sgt. Daniel Stanley Lathrop served with the famed 29th Connecticut Colored Infantry\, and into the twentieth century\, where the lineage continued to serve in both World Wars and National Guard militias shut out of state support. \nPart genealogy\, part social history\, and part personal journey\, The Narrative of Primus blends historical storytelling with the author’s lived experience as a Black American and direct descendant of enslaved ancestors. Mills interrogates myths surrounding American liberty\, challenges long-held racial narratives\, and re-centers Black families whose sacrifices helped shape the nation. \nThe Narrative of Primus is a compelling and deeply personal contribution to African American history\, slavery studies\, New England history\, Connecticut history\, genealogy\, and the American story. It reminds us that America was built not only by the celebrated\, but by the unseen-and that their descendants are still here to tell the story. \nPurchase the book here.

SUMMARY:Good Girlfriends Book Club: The Reformatory by Tananarive Due
DESCRIPTION:Born from our monthly Summer Reading Series\, a group of smart and funny women came together\, united by their love for books and good company\, and thus the Good Girlfriends Book Club was created. Now we’re inviting you to join the club! \nJoin us on Friday\, April 17th at 6pm as we discuss Shelara’s pick\, The Reformatory by Tananarive Due. \nAbout The Reformatory: \nA gripping\, page-turning “masterpiece” (Joe Hill\, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Fireman) set in Jim Crow Florida that follows Robert Stephens Jr. as he’s sent to a segregated reform school that is a chamber of terrors where he sees the horrors of racism and injustice\, for the living\, and the dead. \nGracetown\, Florida. \nJune 1950. \nTwelve-year-old Robbie Stephens Jr. is sentenced to six months at the Gracetown School for Boys\, a reformatory\, for kicking the son of the largest landowner in town in defense of his older sister\, Gloria. So begins Robbie’s journey further into the terrors of the Jim Crow South and the very real horror of the school they call The Reformatory. \nRobbie has a talent for seeing ghosts\, or haints. But what was once a comfort to him after the loss of his mother has become a window to the truth of what happens at the reformatory. Boys forced to work to remediate their so-called crimes have gone missing\, but the haints Robbie sees hint at worse things. Through his friends Redbone and Blue\, Robbie is learning not just the rules\, but how to survive. Meanwhile\, Gloria is rallying every family member and connection in Florida to find a way to get Robbie out before it’s too late. \nThe Reformatory is a “hallucinatory\, haunting\, terrifying\, and moving” (S.A. Cosby\, bestselling author of All the Sinners Bleed) work of historical fiction written as only American Book Award–winning author Tananarive Due could\, by piecing together the life of the relative her family never spoke of and bringing his tragedy and those of so many others at the infamous Dozier School for Boys to the light in this riveting novel. \nPurchase the book here.
